Why This Guide Exists
Too many people fly north for one night, see only cloud and go home believing the aurora is a myth. This guide is here to help you plan a trip that gives the sky a fair chance.
What We Do
Wavesnordjlt is an independent, reader-funded-by-nobody project. We write plain, practical guides to the best-known northern lights areas in Norway, Sweden and Finland. We focus on three things that genuinely change your odds: how dark a place gets, how often it tends to be cloudy, and how easily you can travel there and move around in winter.
We describe places by their lasting character: the rain shadow at Abisko, the open fells of Saariselkä, the changeable coast around Tromsø and Lofoten. We avoid quoting prices or opening hours, which change often. For those, please check the official source directly.
How We Research
Our notes draw on time spent in the region, conversations with local residents and guides, and published information from public bodies such as the Finnish Meteorological Institute, MET Norway, SMHI and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. When we describe a natural pattern, such as the equinox effect or the clearer skies of inland Lapland, we explain it as a tendency rather than a rule.
What We Will Never Do
Promise a sighting
No one can. We will always say so.
